Just For Fun: Sketching The Past

Hi Everyone,

This weeks blog is slight detour. I’m knee-deep in paint and flowers so hopefully by next weeks blog I should have another little flower show. 🙂

This week though I thought I’d share what I’m doing while gallery sitting. I volunteer Friday mornings at my local community arts gallery, the Station Masters Art Gallery here in Strathalbyn. It can get a little quiet some mornings especially on cold rainy days, so to fill the time I have been sketching.

I’d love to be doing my cathedral drawing which I fear will take as long to finish as it took to actually build! It is quite large though and being an avid pedestrian (i.e. I don’t drive) carting it about would be clumsy and dangerous in the rain…so I’ve gone a little smaller and taken a leaf from nostalgia, largely my dear husbands’ (Jamie) childhood.

The first image is little Jamie as a young boy with his own invented super hero. Captain Dirty-Dirty. The second image is still a work in progress and is baby Jamie playing in the mud. Well it will be when I’m finished. 🙂

It may be obvious to some, that a few details are missing. That is because I’m going to paint these drawings in the spare moments between flowers.

Obviously with the second sketch I’ve a while to go. I’m having issues with Jamie’s knee (who knew they’d be so difficult LOL) and his hand and the shading in his face. I’ve made him look cranky LOL.

Drawing is not really my medium. I think in colour and I think that’s where I struggle most with people so I expect it will improve with paint. My colouring in is way, way worse than my sketching! Yes I’ll stick to paint I think. 🙂

When they’re done I’ll share the finished results in a few weeks time.

Until next week I wish you all a very bright and happy week ahead. May creativity in all it’s varied and beautiful forms embrace and inspire you. 🙂

  1. Hi Tikarma,
They look fantastic. I am very flattered to be the subject of your sketching 🙂 You have done Captain Dirty Dirty proud. Maybe you should do a Captain Dirty Dirty comic book 🙂
I do love your treatment of that muddy faced boy 🙂 I can’t wait to see them finished. You have done a wonderful job, especially consideringthe small photos you have to work with.
It is great you have been able to make the most of those quiet times in the gallery. Keep up the great work! I am very proud of you ♡.

With all the love in my heart, always and forever,

    Jamie

    1. Hi Jamie,
I’m really glad you are happy with how the drawings are coming along. It’s always a little unnerving drawing or painting people.
It’s good though to challenge oneself and why not have some fun too. 🙂
They will of course look radically different once they’re painted. Who would’ve thought Captain Dirty-Dirty would see colour! 🙂
I think though I’ll leave the comics to the true geniuses like Stan Lee. 🙂
I hope you’ll like the painted renditions when they’re finished.
You keep up the good work too.
      Ever proud of you 🙂
      Yours in love always
      Tikarma.

  2. Hi Tikarma,

The overall impression I get from this blog is that you were enjoying yourself. 🙂
And that surely is the whole point.

I love watching people sketch or paint. There is an artist in Whitby who has a shop/studio. On quiet days he will often be painting when I go in – I could stand and watch him for ages. 🙂

If I can remember his name and find a link I will send it to you.

I am also fascinated by your statement “I think in colour”.
I have met other people who do that and it has always intrigued me – it is a quite special talent I think.

Give my regards to Jamie too – You have made him grumpy in that second sketch 🙂 And I know he is not like that!!

    1. Hi David,
Thankyou so much for your lovely comments.

It’s a strange sort of fun because drawing is a greater and more frustrating challenge for me. I suppose the fun is in the accomplishment. 🙂

I would be very interested in a link if you are able to find one.
A lot of the artists paint etc. When they are at the gallery. I think is wonderful to be able to see other artists at work.
      🙂

I did indeed make Jamie grumpy. It’s the shading in the eyes. I’ll have him back to his cheerful self very soon. 🙂

Thanks again. I do hope you are doing well?

      1. Hi David,

Thank you very much for the link. I appreciate it. I have had a quick look and Wow! John’s work is very impressive. I’ll be spending more time at the site having a more in depth look in the morning. 🙂

  3. These are great Tikarma!

I would love to be able to sketch and paint but it just never seems to work. Anyway, I would have to train my left hand now! Lol

You have so much talent, and thinking in colour is fascinating

Looking forward to much more of your artwork.

    Lots of love and

    1. Hi Christine,
Guess what I found in my spam box. :-O I have no idea how your comment ended up there. I’m just glad I found it! 🙂

It has taken me a long time to learn how to draw. I started painting before I could draw. Go figure I don’t understand it either. It was three years after painting seriously that I finally found the courage to draw. I’m still learning!

*blushing* thank you. I’m very flattered you feel I do have talent. I still think it’s more potential. I always find soemthing to improve. 🙂 Hmmm yes I’m a perfectionist at heart too. 🙂

I am left handed so that’s easy for me *cheeky grin* I don’t think I’d fair too well if I had to use my right hand though. I’m extremely left dominate so my right side is really just there to even out my proportions *LOL*.

Thank you again..and never say never. 🙂 With the wonders of technology now you may in the future find an app that allows you draw with more ease, you never know, you have a lot of talent yourself. You may find a surprise or two. 🙂

      With much love and

  4. Hi Tikarma, Ive been trying to comment on this for a few days. i think my IPad is playing up. The comments are getting swept away, but I can still comment from the main computer which is upstairs.

Anyway, I love your sketches.you are multi talented indeed! I wish I could sketch/paint but stick men are my forte!! Lol

    Poor Jamie, looking cranky!

    1. Hi Christine,
Thankyou so much for your lovely response. 🙂

I’m sorry to hear your i-pad is giving you troubles. *fingers crossed* it comes good again for you very soon!

It wasn’t all the long ago that my drawing was stick figures too. 🙂
I learn a lot from drawing though. It’s improved my overall skills a lot! It took a while though to get over my fear and realise if I’m painting then I can draw too. 🙂

I’ll have Jamie back to his cheerful self very soon. 🙂 I hope you’ll like the finished result when they’re done.

      I will get the catherdal finished!…eventually I promise. 🙂

      Thanks again. 🙂
I hope you are going alright?
